Joseph BURNETT married Ann ROBERTS at St. Giles parish church, Pontefract in 1730. Joseph’s origins are as yet unknown. There were four known children of the marriage, three daughters and a son named Joseph, all baptised at Knottingley with the surname BURNETT. Two of the daughters later married with the surname BURNETT but the marriage of son Joseph was recorded with the surname BURNITT and all of his eight children had their baptisms recorded with this variant spelling. BURNITT is a common written variant of the name BURNETT in Yorkshire but Joseph Jnr permanently adopted this variant and it appears to have become accepted as the 'norm' by his descendants - though one or two branches of the family later reverted to BURNETT. So marked is this change that if individuals are found who consistently used the name BURNITT in official records there is every chance that they were members of this Knottingley family tree.
