62. Warren BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Warren, Jun 1869, Leyburn, 9d 483

Family folklore has it that Warren BURNETT emigrated to Canada as a young man and died there as a pauper.
[Information provided by Warren BURNETT, a descendant of this Warren BURNETT’s brother - contact made Dec 2003]

64. Margaret BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Margaret, Dec 1872, Leyburn, 9d 539

1881 & 1891 census: with parents & siblings - see notes for father George BURNETT

Margaret married Walter WIGHT in 1894, probably at Buckden. Her parents were living at Buckden at the time of the 1891 and 1901 census.

1901 census: RG13/4025, folio 28, p1

Mathias DIXON, serv, 22, single, farm servant, Kidstone
Thomas THOMPSON, 76, widr, mole catcher, Thirn? Yks.
//
**Margaret was Walter WIGHT's wife, not his sister, she was not born at Buckden, and head of household Walter was not a widower.  The enumerator has written "F Rel" against the entry for Margaret - possibly "false relationship"?  But why the deliberate misinformation?

42. Hannah BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Hannah, Mar 1841, Leyburn, xxiv 395

1841 & 1851 census: at home with her parents in Preston under Scar - see notes for father William BURNETT

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Hannah, Dec 1884, Dewsbury, 9b 448, age 44

Peter BURNETT

Peter's baptism and those of his sisters Phillis [sic] and Elizabeth were recorded under the surname BARNETT in the East Witton parish register.

1841 census: HO107/1254/12, folio 4, p1
With his parents at "Tranmire", East Witton - see notes for father Thomas BURNETT.

1851 census: HO107/238, folio 358, p6
Ellerton on Swale
Peter BERNETT [sic], 12, farm servant, Ellingstring
//
One of six 'servants' with farmer John EARLE and his family.

1861 census: RG9/3668, folio 76, p12
Bolton Arms Inn, Leyburn
Peter BURNETT, unm, 21, farm servant, Fencote
//
One of eight 'servants' recorded at the Bolton Arms Inn with head of household John RIDLEY, innkeeper and farmer. Peter's given birthplace "Fencote" is in the parish of Kirkby Fleetham - his mother moved her family there after the death of Peter's father in 1847.

Peter married Hannah BURNETT, a member of the Wensleydale branch of the name, at Wensley parish church in 1865. The Wensleydale branch have not so far been linked with Peter's Bishop Monkton branch of the name.
1871 census: RG10/4597, folio 33, p3
Church Street, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe
Peter BURNETT, head, 32, carrier, Bedale*
Hannah      do       wife, 30, housewife, Wensley

//
*Peter was born at "Tranmire" in the parish of East Witton, not far from the market town of Bedale.

1881 census: RG11/4556, folio 117, p3
Church St., Mirfield
Peter BURNETT, head, 42, carrier, Witton, York
Hannah      do       wife, 40, Wensley
Kate           do       daur, 14, woolen mill hand, Mirfield
Willie.       do        son, 12, scholar, Mirfield

Hannah M. do       dau, 3,                do
Albert         do       son, 1,                do
Ellen SIDDAL    neice, 21, unm, domestic servant, Wensley
Lavinia    do         daur, 2w, Mirfield
//
Sons Albert, William and Frederick, in later census returns, gave their birthplace as Ravensthorpe - see below.
Two week old Lavinia was almost certainly the illegitimate daughter of Peter's unmarried niece Ellen SIDDAL. She had probably gone to stay with her aunt Hannah for the birth - away from prying eyes back home in Wensley.

Peter's wife Hannah died in 1884 and he married again, in 1885, probably at Mirfield, his second wife being Eizabeth STOREY.

1891 census: RG12/3730, folio 105, p43
Charles Street, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe
Peter BURNETT, head, 52, carrier, Yorkshire -- County only given for birthplace for all individuals.
Elizabeth    do       wife, 57, Westmorland

Peter BURNETT, head, 62, general carrier, Masham
Elizabeth    do       wife, 47, Temple Sowerby Westmorland
Albert        do       son, unm, 21, general carrier, Ravensthorpe
//

Two other sons of Peter BURNETT from his marriage to Hannah BURNETT were recorded at Ravensthorpe in 1901 - each working as a general carrier giving his birthplace as Ravensthorpe [see notes for sons William and Frederick]

As far as Peter was concerned his birthplace was a 'moveable feast' - he gave five different birthplaces for census returns.

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Peter, Jun 1908, Dewsbury, 9b 372 age 69.

Age at death is consistent with birth c1839 and Ravensthorpe, Peter's home for at least 35yrs was in the Dewsbury District. The death of Peter's sister Phyllis was also registered at Dewsbury in 1877 - she was almost certainly staying with Peter when she died.

44. Alice BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Alice, Jun 1847, Leyburn, xxiv 434

It is strange that Alice and her older sister Mary are the only ones of the nine children of parents William & Mary BURNETT for whom a baptism record has not been found. The baptisms of all seven of their siblings were recorded in the Wensley parish register.

1851 census: with parents in Preston - see notes for father William BURNETT.

1861 census: with widowed mother in Preston - see notes for mother Mary STOREY.

1871 and 1881 census: Alice and her supposed illegitimate daughter Elizabeth were living with unmarried brother John BURNETT.
[see notes for brother John BURNETT]

It appears that Alice married Robert Peel SYKES in 1885 at Huddersfield.

1891 census: RG12/3570, folio , p36
3 Eleanor Street, Fartown, Huddersfield
Robert P SYKES, head, 28, bookbinder, Huddersfield

The GRO Index of Marriages has only one marriage which 'fits' for Simon - a marriage registered at Halifax during the June quarter 1880. There is no obvious reason why Simon should have married in Halifax.

The implication of the relationships and ages given in this return is that Hartley BURNETT's wife Sarah, nee RODGERS died sometime after the 1881 census and he married a second wife, named Sarah BAXTER before 1891. This is apparently confirmed in two entries in the GRO Indexes.
Deaths: BURNETT, Sarah, Mar 1882, Burnley, 8e 165 Age 53.
Marriages: BURNETT, Hartley, Jun 1883, Burnley, 8e 240 ["Free BMD" web site confirms spouse Sarah BAXTER]

Hartley's second wife was the former Sarah DOBSON who married her first husband William BAXTER in 1857. She had at least four children with William before he died. There were no children of her ten year marriage to Hartley BURNETT - who died in 1893.

83. Ruth BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Ruth, Jun 1859, Burnley, 8e 167]

Sarah (DOBSON) BAXTER

1881 census returns show that Sarah was already a widow at that time. [RG11/4150, folio 156, p52]

1871 census returns show Sarah & husband William BAXTER and three daughters under 15 in Colne, Lancs. [RG10/4157, folio 96, p27]

The eldest of the daughters recorded in the 1871 census return was 14yrs old - suggesting that her parents married during or before 1857. A search of the GRO marriage index found the following: BAXTER, William, Mar 1857, Burnley, 8e 209. The "Free BMD" web site has possible spouse Sarah DOBSON with the same reference.

At the time of this census Thomas & Jane's daughter Elizabeth and their son William were staying with William ATKINSON, described as their "grandfather", at Market Place, Leyburn. [See notes for daughter Elizabeth Ann BURNETT]. William ATKINSON was actually the step-grandfather of Thomas & Jane's children - their paternal grandfather John BURNETT died and their paternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Bessy) nee STOREY, married again - her second husband being William ATKINSON.

Thomas' wife Jane died in 1897.
