//

John was his wife Elizabeth's second husband. Her maiden surname is unknown but she had previously married George KAY in c1870 - Jane was her daughter from that marriage born in 1872. At the time of the 1871 census George & Elizabeth KAY where living at Stranton, West HartlepoolI [RG10/4918, folio 103, p47]. The census return shows that Elizabeth was born at Preston under Scar, Yorkshire. It is not known when George KAY died but Jane appears to have been the only child of his marriage to Elizabeth. It would also appear that John BURNETT did not have any children with Elizabeth.

The National Burials Index has the burial of a John BURNETT, age 67yrs, of Hilltop, Constable Burton, at Finghall (St. Andrew), on 12 Apr 1899. The given age at death is consistent with birth in c1832. We can be sure that the record refers to this John BURNETT because 1901 census returns show Elizabeth BURNETT, widow, 51, at Hill Top Farm, Constable Burton with a nephew Joseph S. DINSDALE, 21, woodsman, born Leeds [RG13/4604, folio 122, p5]

40. Mary BURNETT

It is strange that Mary and her younger sister Alice are the only ones of the nine children of parents William & Mary BURNETT for whom a baptism record has not been found. The baptisms of all seven of their siblings were recorded in the Wensley parish register.

//

23. Mary BURNETT

Mary had a son named John BURNETT who was born in 1831 - five years before her marriage to John ROBINSON. It is possible that John BURNETT was the natural but illegitimate son of John ROBINSON - he was recorded as his "son" in later census returns [see below] but may in fact have been his step-son.

1851 census: HO107/2379, folio 370, p15
Preston
John ROBINSON, head, 48, lead miner, Preston
Mary         do         wife, 50, Preston

Though relationships were not given for the 1841 census it is highly likely that Mary HARTLEY was Henry BURNETT's mother-in-law. The maiden surname of his wife Alice was HARTLEY.

[Next dwelling: John ROBINSON, 35, coal miner and Mary ROBINSON, 40, both born Yks. Mary was John BURNETT's older sister]

John's wife Elizabeth was recorded as a "widow" in census returns for 1851 [see notes for Elizabeth STOREY]

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, John, Dec 1841, Leyburn, xxiv 267 - *probably* the correct reference for this John BURNETT

Elizabeth (Bessy) STOREY

Elizabeth was known as Bessy and was probably a close relative of the Mary STOREY who married William BURNETT, Bessy's brother-in-law, and the Matthew STOREY who married Jane BURNETT - her sister-in-law.

Bessy's husband John BURNETT died in 1841.

Young William BURNETT, full name William Miller BURNETT, was Bessy's grandson [son of Thomas BURNETT, her son from her first marriage]

Bessy died between 1881 and 1891 - her second husband William ATKINSON was described as a "widower" in 1891 census returns. William BURNETT was still living with him and also William BURNETT's sister Elizabeth - see notes for grandson William BURNETT. Bessy's death registration has not been found.

55. Mary BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Mary, Dec 1838, Leyburn, 24 336

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Mary, Jun 1840, Leyburn, xxiv 259

32. David BURNETT

1841 census: HO107/1254/8, folio 8, p10

There is no record of David or his wife Mary in the National Index to 1861 or 1871 census returns but their son Edmund was recorded at Preston in 1861 returns and as a boarder in Darlington, Durham in 1871 returns. It is likely that both David & Mary died before 1861.

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, David, Jun 1855, Stockton, 10a 47, *possibly* relates to the death of this David BURNETT.
