39. William BURNETT
William emigrated to Vermont in America with his uncle, Thomas METCALF, when he was a young man and married there. Many years later his brother John also emigrated. William obviously returned to his home country in later life - he lived in Yorkshire at the time of his death in 1902.
All of the information about William's descendants came from Rose Barnes, a great-granddaughter of William's brother John, who provided a detailed family tree showing the descendants of the two brothers in America. This information has since been confirmed in the original source - the book by Charles Henning HENDRICKS published in 1996 under the title: "William Burnett and Edna Mead of Underhill, Vermont : their descendants and their ancestry ", available on microfilm through the LDS Family History Library.

This Abraham was without doubt the son of the recently deceased Edward BURNETT of Ripon but his mother was Ann BURNETT, nee HELMSLEY, who would have been 54 yrs old at the time of this census and who was born in Bedale. So who was the 'mother' Jane BURNETT in this census return? **Possibly** Mary Jane, daughter of Edward & Ann BURNETT of Ripon, with her supposed illegitimate son. If this was the case she was almost certainly NOT a widow, she had added 8yrs to her age and she had given a false birthplace. There was an unusually long gap of 14yrs between the birth of Edward & Ann's son Harry and the birth of Abraham, and Ann would have been 41yrs old when Abraham was born whereas her daughter Mary Jane would have been just 22yrs old. The jury is still out.1901 census: RG13/4042, folio 10, p12

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Christopher, Sep 1862, Ripon, 9a 70
Christopher's mother died when he was just 2yrs old and his father John BURNETT married again. After having six more children with his second wife, John emigrated with his family to America. Christopher was thought to have accompanied them. According to information provided by Rose Barnes in America, a descendant of John BURNETT, Christopher died on 14 Jul 1962 - she did not say where. If correct, Christopher was 100yrs old at the time of his death. This could not be confirmed in primary sources, indeed Christopher was not recorded with his father & half-siblings in 1871 census returns [his sister Jane Ann was] and the GRO Index of Deaths contains the following entry: BURNETT, Christopher, Sep 1862, Ripon, 9a 45.
It would appear that Christopher died as an infant. The date of death was *probably* 14 Jul 1862.
88. Jane Ann BURNETT
Information from Rose Barnes, a descendant of Jane Ann's father John BURNETT who lives in America, gives date of birth 20 May 1863. This is NOT consistent with ages in census returns and birth registration. The date of birth was *probably* 20 May 1861.

//No record of Polly's marriage to Joseph BAINS has yet been found.
GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, George Herbert, Mar 1875, Settle, 9a 21
The entry for George Herbert's baptism, in the Bishop Monkton parish register, indicates that he was the [illegitimate] son of Mary BURNETT, "single woman" of Manchester. It would appear that Mary, having become pregnant while working away from home in Manchester, had come home for the birth and to have the child baptised. Mary's brother Thomas had recently married and moved to the Skipton area and it is possible that Mary stayed with him and his wife.
George Herbert may have been brought up by his grandparents, George and Margaret BURNETT. At the time of the 1881 census he was staying with George & Margaret in Bishop Monkton. Given age 6yrs, birthplace Malham [see notes for grandfather George BURNETT].

William was living next door to his father George BURNETT. Wife Annie was a widow when she married William, her first husband having been named FULLER and the two children of that name being from that relationship. Peter BURNETT in America, a descendant of William and Annie provided the information that her maiden surname was REYNARD. The lodger William REYNARD was probably a close relative - possibly her brother.
Wife Annie died in 1896 shortly after son William jnr was born. William snr wasted no time in marrying again - he married second wife Sarah in 1897 [GRO: Mar 1897, Ripon].

**James Henry BURNETT, the first child of William's second marriage.
Information provided by Peter BURNETT in America shows that William died in c1922 in Lagos, Nigeria. Kay Gifford and Linda Donald, two others with research interests in William Burnett, have found shipping records that showed he had voyaged to and from Africa on several occasions from the early 1900’s to 1920. It is possible that William might have been 'trapped' in Lagos for the duration of the First World War 1914-18.
Annie's maiden name was REYNARD. Her marriage to William BURNETT was her second. Her first marriage was to a man named FULLER with whom she had two children, Edward b:1881, and Edith b:1884. These children were listed as William BURNETT's step-children in 1881 census returns. [see notes for husband William BURNETT]

Information provided by Peter BURNETT in America, a descendant of Mabel's brother Fred, suggests that she died in a tragic fire accident.

[Following notes provided by Kay
GIFFORD]
There is some evidence to suggest that his Annie BURNETT had a
(possibly)
illegitimate male child, prior to marrying Benjamin R. AITCHISON
in 1914, in
Darlington, Co Durham. He died 1949 in Durham. They had a child
Agnes
AITCHISON, b: 28 Aug 1915, Co Durham (d: 8 Nov 2008 Bishop
Auckland, Durham).
Agnes was brought up by her father Benjamin Aitchison and his sister, as Annie left the marriage whilst husband was serving in France. He asked his mother had she seen Annie as he had not received replies to his letters. It appears that Annie left behind Agnes and took off with her son never to be heard of or found at a later date. It is possible that she met up with an American or Canadian and left with him for the America's in c1918.
