Given that she was born in Bedale, granddaughter Jane was probably the daughter of William's son Edward, who married Ann HELMSLEY of Bedale in 1855. Edward and Ann did have a daughter named Mary Jane whose birth was registered in 1856. There is no trace of Edward and his family in 1861 census returns for England & Wales - he was a railway worker and may have been in Scotland.1871 census: RG10/4280, folio 3, p1

The fact that grandson Arthur was born in Dishforth makes it highly likely that he was a son of William's son John, who married his second wife Martha PLACE in 1870 and who lived at Dishforth. Little Arthur may have pre-empted his parent's marriage by a few months!
Grandson Thomas was a son of William's son Thomas who was living at Littlethorpe at the time of this census.

//At least two of William's sons, William jnr and John, emigrated to America during the late nineteenth century. A detailed family tree for both these brothers has been provided by a descendant of John in America.
William died in 1889 at the grand old age of 93yrs.
Monumental Inscription, Bishop Monkton churchyard:

Jane died at Dishforth in 1875 and her body was taken to Bishop Monkton for burial. She was probably staying with her son John and his family, who lived at Dishforth, at the time of her death. Part of the monumental inscription on the headstone marking her grave reads: "And she is gone whom we so fondly loved, whose tender kindness we so often proved. Yes, she is gone, her happy Spirit fled and now she's numbered with the sleeping dead"

19. Thomas BURNETT
An index to a transcript of Ripon parish registers has the baptism of Thomas, son of William BURNETT of Hood Hole on 11 Jan 1798. It also has the burial of Thomas, son of William Burnett of Hood Hole, the day before the baptism, on 10 Jan 1798. It is possible that there were two sons named Thomas and that one died at about the time that the other was born but it seems more likely that the burial record was an error. There is no doubt that Thomas b: 1798 survived; as witnessed by the 1871 census returns for Burton Leonard (see below)
