Thomas was described as a "farmer of Broadfields" on the marriage bond for his marriage to Jane WEBSTER in 1801. Jane was a spinster "of Hood Hall [sic]". Thomas' brother William Burnett gave his abode as "Hood Hole" at the baptisms of all of his children - the first being in 1792. The same brother, William Burnett, was the bondsman for Thomas' marriage licence but was described as a farmer of "Broadfields".
Thomas BURNETT, "late of Broadfields in the Parish of Ripon", left a will, dated 5 Oct 1805, proved 25 Jan 1806 at York, which named his brother John BURNETT and Thomas THEAKSTON as joint executors. Wife Jane and children John and Ellen were the only named beneficiaries of the will. Thomas' estate was valued at under £300.
Thomas' children were unnamed beneficiaries of the will of his uncle Thomas BURNETT of Bishop Monkton, in 1814 - " ... the two children of my late nephew Thomas Burnett deceased ..."
In 1791 William's sister Ann married William MAWSON; almost certainly a brother of William's wife Dorothy MAWSON. William Burnett was bondsman for the marriage licence and made an oath that William Mawson's guardian had consented to the marriage (William Mawson was a minor at the time of the marriage). William Burnett was also bondsman for the marriage licence when his brother Thomas married Jane WEBSTER in 1801. On both these marriage bonds William was described as being "... of Broadfields in the parish of Ripon", however, Ripon Parish register records his residence as "Hood Hole" in the baptism entries for all of his children between 1792 and 1806.
William was described as "my nephew...deceased..." in his uncle Thomas' will in 1814. The burial in 1807 would therefore appear to be the correct one. The Ripon burial register gives William's residence at time of death as "Low Maines, Monkton" but he is known to have lived at "Hood Hole". He was probably staying with a relative at "Low Mains" at the time of his death but it is not clear which relative this might have been. There was obviously some kind of family connection with "Low Mains" because, years later, a nephew, George BURNETT (son of William's brother John), gave his residence as "Low Demaines", Bishop Monkton, when he had his son John baptised at Ripon. George was still living at "Low Demaines" at the time of the 1881 census.

//Nephew William BURNETT was the eldest of three children of Edward BURNETT's late brother George BURNETT, who died in 1839.
Edward left a will, dated 20 Apr 1855, proved 14 Jul 1855, which does not name any of the beneficiaries. They are simply described as "my wife" and "all my brothers and sisters" etc. The will bequeathed all of Edward's real and personal estate, upon trust, to two friends; named as George SMAILES and Thomas INGLE, both of Ripley. These 'trustees' were instructed to "sell and dispose of the same" and to make appropriate investments with all of the proceeds; the interest arising from these investments to be paid to his wife during her lifetime. After his wife's death the principal money was to be withdrawn from the various investments and divided equally "amongst my own brothers and sisters and the brothers and sisters of my wife" The will mentions children of these brothers and sisters but does not mention any children of Edward's own marriage to wife Mary - it seems reasonable to assume that there were none.

13. John BURNETT
John was joint executor of his brother Thomas' will in 1806 - he was described then as "farmer of Azerley...Kirkby Malzeard". After his first marriage John's residence was given as "Straw House" - which still exists, just off the road between Kirkby Malzeard and Ripon, near Clotherholme. The only child of this marriage, William, and John's first wife Phyllis both died at "Straw House" but were buried at Bishop Monkton, according to the burial entries in the Ripon parish register. John was consistently described as "farmer of Straw House" in the Ripon parish register from his second marriage in 1811, until the baptism of his daughter Jane in 1817; when he was described as "innkeeper of Ripon". John moved his family from Ripon to Topcliffe - his next child, daughter Elizabeth, was baptised there. Rainton in the parish of Topcliffe was the original home of his second wife Jane RAINFORTH - this was the residence she gave on their marriage bond. The rest of John's children were baptised in Topcliffe and both he and his wife Jane were buried there.
Monumental Inscription, St. Columb, Topcliffe:
"In memory of John BURNETT of Topcliffe Parks who died 7 Jul 1839 aged 65yrs. Also Jane BURNETT wife of the above who died 24 Nov 1863 aged 72yrs."
A Ripon parish register transcript shows that Phillis wife of John BURNETT of "Sloan House" was buried at Bishop Monkton. The given place of death is thought to be a wrongly transcribed "Shaw/Straw House"
which was husband John's residence.
