Descendants of Edward BURNETT of Bishop Monkton

Notes

33. Thomas Wilson BURNETT

1841 census: age 11yrs, living in East Witton, Yorkshire, with his father Thomas Snr. and step-mother Catherine (nee Graham).

1851 census index: Thomas was not at home with his widowed mother Catherine and her three daughters at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire.

1871 census: living above the shop at 51 Main Street, West Cornforth, where he worked as a shoemaker. Age 40, birthplace given as "Slenford", Yorkshire. Wife Elizabeth two sons and two children with surname PEARSON were with Thomas.

1881 census: living in Heighington, Durham with wife Elizabeth and son Robert also living with them was Hannah PEARSON, age 21, born Manchester, and described as Thomas' unmarried "daughter".

1901 census: Thomas Wilson Burnett was still alive and well, living in Heighington, age 70, widowed, shoemaker, born "Sleneford" [sic] Yorkshire.

Thomas married twice. First wife was Elizabeth BARRETT and she was the mother of first son David Dixon BURNETT. Shortly after David's birth Elizabeth died, and some time later Thomas married Elizabeth PEARSON, who was herself a widow and who had two children from her previous marriage. Second wife Elizabeth was the mother of Thomas' second son Robert Thomas BURNETT.

Elizabeth BARRETT

Elizabeth died at a very young age and her husband, Thomas BURNETT, married again. The fact that his second wife was also named Elizabeth for some time confused future family history researchers! The 'problem' set by Thomas having two wives named Elizabeth was solved by collaboration between researchers after several years of investigation. Dave BURNETT in Canada, a descendant of Thomas BURNETT and Elizabeth BARRETT, through their son David Dixon BURNETT, has researched the origins of Elizabeth BARRETT and provided the following note: "Once it was known that first wife Elizabeth BARRETT was not covered by later census information, the search for her origins was eventually extended beyond Yorkshire and County Durham. When an IGI batch search uncovered a possible Elizabeth with an oldest brother named David Dixon BARRETT the trail to her Cumberland origins was clear. Detailed proof of her line is available on request" [via the e-mail link on the "Contents" page for this family tree]

The name of Elizabeth's father is confirmed on her marriage certificate as Abraham BARRETT. Elizabeth gave her birthplace as Kirby Fleetham for census returns but Dave BURNETT has found no record of her baptism, nor her parent's marriage, in the Kirby Fleetham parish register.

Peter BURNETT, unm, 21, farm servant, Fencote
//
One of eight 'servants' recorded at the Bolton Arms Inn with head of household John RIDLEY, innkeeper and farmer. Peter's given birthplace "Fencote" is in the parish of Kirkby Fleetham - his mother moved her family there after the death of Peter's father in 1847.

Peter married Hannah BURNETT, a member of the Wensleydale branch of the name, at Wensley parish church in 1865. The Wensleydale branch have not so far been linked with Peter's branch of the name.

Lavinia  do         daur, 2w, Mirfield
//
Sons Albert, William and Frederick, in later census returns, gave their birthplace as Ravensthorpe - see below.
Two week old Lavinia was almost certainly the illegitimate daughter of Peter's unmarried niece Ellen SIDDAL. She had probably gone to stay with her aunt Hannah for the birth - away from prying eyes back home in Wensley.

Peter's wife Hannah died in 1884 and he married again, in 1885, probably at Mirfield, his second wife being Eizabeth STOREY. The STOREYs were another Wensleydale family.

1891 census: RG12/3730, folio 105, p43

//

Two other sons of Peter BURNETT from his marriage to Hannah BURNETT were recorded at Ravensthorpe in 1901 - each working as a general carrier giving his birthplace as Ravensthorpe [see notes for sons William and Frederick]

As far as Peter was concerned his birthplace was a 'moveable feast' - he gave five different birthplaces for census returns.

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Peter, Jun 1908, Dewsbury, 9b 372 age 69.

Age at death is consistent with birth c1839 and Ravensthorpe, Peter's home for at least 35yrs was in the Dewsbury District. The death of Peter's sister Phyllis was also registered at Dewsbury in 1877 - she was almost certainly staying with Peter when she died.

44. Joseph BURNETT

1841 census: HO107/1351, folio 17, p5
Living with his parents & siblings at Bishop Monkton - see notes for father Christopher BURNETT

Joseph was not recorded with his parents in 1851 census returns, when they were living at Spofforth, and has not been found elsewhere. He would have been 17yrs old at that time and probably working away from home. His future wife Jane SMITH was recorded with her parents George & Ruth SMITH at an address in Lower Market Street, Birkenhead [HO107/2175, folio 381, p56]. George SMITH was a railway porter, born in Scotland and Joseph was working as a railway clerk by 1861 [see below]. It seems quite likely that Joseph met his wife Jane through a work connection with her father.

//

Joseph died in 1903 aged 69 yrs. His death was registered in Ecclesall Bierlow.

Alice BURNETT, one of Joseph's granddaughters, was responsible for drawing up a family tree in the 1960's a copy of which her nephew Gordon RAGG has provided. Kathie KLINE in America appears to have worked from the same family tree but has made many additions which are not shown on Gordon's copy - so too has Gordon LORIMER in Canada. It would seem that copies of Alice's tree were distributed to interested family members shortly after it was compiled and that it has formed the basis for more recent research. The information about the descendants of Joseph BURNETT and Jane (nee SMITH) provided by Kathie Kline and the two Gordons has formed a solid foundation for further research.

Kathie Kline has information that Joseph took his family to Canada when *his* daughter Alice Ruth was 14yrs old - ie. c1887 - but returned to England a few years later. Alice Ruth, who was Kathie's great-grandmother, her sister Lillian (Elizabeth Jane) and brothers James and Herbert, stayed on in Canada. Gordon Lorimer, who still lives in Canada, is a descendant of Lillian.

Kathie notes that Joseph had founded the "Burnett Fuel Company" in Sheffield in 1872. In 1903 the name was changed to "Burnett Brothers". In 1953 this company took over J Wood (Fuel) Company and Hallamshire Supplies to form Burnett and Hallamshire Ltd; which became Burnett & Hallamshire Holdings Ltd. in 1960.

Further research has revealed that it was Joseph's grandson Alfred George BURNETT who presided over this major expansion of the company's interests [see notes for grandson Alfred George BURNETT - son of Alfred Christopher BURNETT]

The North Riding of Yorkshire Register of Deeds includes an entry in 1890 - Vol:72, p: 1117, No.494 & p: 1119, No.495 - which refers to the foreclosure of a mortgage and re-possession of property at 3 Windsor Tce. Whitby, Yorkshire; mortgaged in the sum of £2,050 to the Sheffield & Hallamshire Bank by Joseph BURNETT. A court order dated 18 Jan 1890 gave Frederick Joseph BURNETT, son of the "defendant", until 19 Feb 1890 to pay arrears at the Bank's head office in London. The money was not paid and the Bank applied for re-possession of the property on 21 Nov 1890. This was granted by court order dated 24 Nov 1890 (but not registered until 21 Dec 1895). The "defendant", Joseph BURNETT was resident in Montreal, Canada, in 1890.

The above property was the home of Joseph's parents Christopher & Dorothy BURNETT at the time of the 1871 census. It is known that his mother Dorothy ran it as a small boarding house.

Jane SMITH

Jane Burnett, nee Smith 1835 - 1916

The birth certificate of Alice Ruth BURNETT, Jane's daughter born in 1873, identified the mother as "Jane BURNETT formerly SMITH".

Kathie Kline's family tree gives 4 Mar 1835 as Jane's date of birth but no birthplace. It also has Jane marrying Joseph in Holy Trinity Church, Birkenhead, but gives no date. Sources of informatioon are not given.

Gill Baddeley has the same date and birthplace Dalbeattie, Dumfries, Scotland - taken from an entry in a family Bible. Gill also has a copy marriage certificate which confirms Jane's marriage to Joseph BURNETT was at Birkenhead on 1 Aug 1857.

75. Claude Henry BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: Claude Henry BURNETT, Mar 1865, Doncaster, 9c 537

Information from Gill Baddeley in Australia, taken from a family bible, gives date of birth as 18 Apr 1865 at Montpelier Tce. Doncaster.

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Claude Henry, Mar 1877, Sheffield, 9c 286, age 11.

79. Alice Ruth BURNETT

Given the single name Alice on her birth certificate, which gave 24 Apr 1873 as date of birth. Alice was born at Albert Grove, Kirkmanshulme, Newton, Manchester. Her father, Joseph BURNETT, was employed as the manager of a railway goods depot at that time - it was Joseph who registered the birth on 5 Jun 1873.

Information provided by Gill Baddeley in Australia, taken from a family bible, gives same date and place of birth for Alice.

Alice Ruth was Kathie Kline's great-grandmother and most of the information about Alice and her descendants comes from Kathie Kline's family tree (received 22 Feb 2000).

There were just two children of Alice Ruth's first marriage; Lillian Ruth Gardiner, b: 8 May 1893, and Muriel Gardiner, b: c1900. Both were born in Toronto, Canada. Muriel died in infancy. Lillian Ruth Gardiner married Truman W. J. HARDY in 1911 and they had two children born in Canada before moving to the USA. Both of these children married in Santa Cruz, California, and Truman Hardy died there. Subsequent generations lived in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

Kathie's tree shows five generations of descendants of her great grandmother Alice Ruth's first marriage but there were no children of her second marriage She married Albert Henry ARMSTRONG in 1914 at Ogema, Saskatchewan. Two years later a Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta taken in 1916 found the couple living at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where Albert was a farmer.
[Ancestry.com]

By 1930 Alice and her husband Albert were living in California, USA. The United States Federal Census taken that year recorded them living with Alice's daughter from her first marriage, Lillian Ruth, and her husband Truman W. Hardy, in Santa Barbara, California. Husband Albert was working as a carpenter as was son-in-law Truman Hardy.
[Ancestry.com. 1930 United States Federal Census]

Alice Ruth died on 2 Apr 1971 at Santa Cruz, California just two years short of her century.

Information provided by Kathie Kline Nov 2009:
"[Alice Ruth's daughter] Lillian Ruth, and her husband Truman W. Hardy had 2 children (Helen and Hazel). They came to the US in 1922. The following year Alice came to the US.

New things to add:
1. Lillian Ruth (Gardiner) Hardy died 09 Nov 1990. She is buried beside her husband in Santa Cruz Memorial Cemetery, Oakwood Chapel, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California.
2. Helen Ruth (Hardy) Border passed away on 28 Dec 1996 in Nampa, Ada, Idaho. She is buried Terrace Lawn Cemetery, Boise, Ada, Idaho, USA
3. Helen's husband, Orlin Frederick Border, passed away 31 Oct 2006, also buried in Terrace Lawn Cemetery, Boise, Ada, Idaho.
4. Hazel Alice (Hardy) Sehestedt died 08 Aug 2003 in Utah. She is buried in Terrace Lawn Cemetery, Boise, Ada, Idaho.
5. Hazel's husband, Harold Samuel Sehestedt died in 1997. He is also buried in Terrace Lawn Cemetery, Boise, Ada, Idaho"

52. Thomas BURNETT

Thomas son of William & Ann BURNETT was baptised at Stokesley on 14 Jul 1830 - father William described as a "common carrier".

1841 census: living with his parents in Bishop Monkton - see notes for father William BURNETT.

1851 census: HO107/2283, folio 542, p30

Abraham COHEN, app, 15, apprentice plumber & glazier, Boston Yks.
//
Although he gave his birthplace as Bishop Monkton the apprentice Thomas BURNETT was without doubt the son of William & Ann born and baptised at Stokesley in 1830.

A Thomas BURNETT of East Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire, was listed under the heading "Plumbers & Glaziers" in the 'Royal National Commercial Directory' published in 1855 - definitely *NOT* this Thomas. 1851 census returns for Stamford Bridge show a Thomas BURNETT, 33, plumber & glazier, born York living with his widowed mother Mary BURNETT, 60, born Thirsk.

The 'confusion' over Thomas' birthplace - given as Bishop Monkton in one census, Stokesley in the next - may have been due to the fact that his parents moved around a lot during the time they were having their children. Thomas was baptised in Stokesley and was undoubtedly born there, but his parents moved back to Bishop Monkton shortly after this.

Ann HARRISON

Notes from Colin JAMES, a descendant of Thomas & Ann BURNETT:
"Ann HARRISON, daughter of Joseph HARRISON and Sarah BENTLEY, was born November 16, 1829 in Bradford, Yorks. She was baptised February 25, 1837 at the Zion Chapel, Bridge St., Bradford [Particular Calvanistic Baptist Chapel]. She married Thomas BURNETT November 23, 1853 in Zion Chapel, Bradford, Yorkshire."

Colin makes no mention of Ann's death but husband Thomas was described as a "widower" in 1891 census returns and the following GRO Index entry appears to relate to her: GRO Index of Deaths - BURNETT, Ann, Jun 1888, Bradford, 9b 100, age 58

82. Joseph Henry BURNETT

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Joseph Henry, Sep 1854, Bradford, 9b 140

Althouh Joseph Henry born in Bradford in 1854 he was not baptised until 26 Mar 1856, at Wetherby, on the same day as his sister Mary Ann. She was born at Wetherby in 1855. Less than four months after his baptism Joseph Henry died.

GRO Index of Deaths: BURNETT, Joseph Henry, Jun 1856, Wetherby, 9a 85

83. Mary Ann BURNETT

Although Mary Ann was baptised at the same time as her brother Joseph Henry it is known that they were not twins. Joseph Henry was born in Bradford in 1854 and Mary Ann was born in Wetherby in 1855. Entries in the GRO Index of Births confirm this.

GRO Index of Births: BURNETT, Mary Ann, Dec 1855, Wetherby, 9a 107

Married in 1893. [GRO: Sep 1893, Bradford]

"Free BMD" web site gives two possible spouses; Arthur WOOD or Priestley Rowland MARSHALL. Neither Polly WOOD nor Polly MARSHALL can be found in 1901 census index. However, Colin JAMES, a descendant of Polly BURNETT's sister Sarah Elizabeth, has provided the following note:
"With regard to Polly BURNETT (this may be a wild shot) but it is possible that she married Priestley Rowland MARSHALL as per the GRO September 1893 Bradford 9b 200. Priestley R MARSHALL was the son of Silvester MARSHALL and Caroline HARRISON who married Bradford December 1858 9b 236. Caroline was I believe the sister of Ann HARRISON (Polly's mother) and they had a brother called Priestley ...".

In addition to this one of the witnesses to the marriage of Polly's parents, Thomas BURNETT and Ann HARRISON, was a William PRIESTLEY. The balance of probability is that Polly BURNETT did indeed marry Priestley Rowland MARSHALL in 1893.

Colin JAMES also provided the following note:
"In August [2005] we spent a week in Bradford seeing family and doing some family history. We had long talks with my mother's cousin Margaret Raper nee Beck, eldest daughter of Ellen Beck nee Pedder. Ellen was the youngest daughter of Moses Pedder's second marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Burnett, Polly's sister. Of interest was Margaret telling us about how her mother (Ellen) used to talk about when she was a child they had fur coats as bed covers. It would seem that they could only use them as a bedding because they weren't well enough off to wear them in the street. These coats had been sent to them by one of Sarah Eliazabeth's sisters who was living in Russia! We now have two pictures which she also sent over and which Ellen had passed down to Margaret, but they are not of known family. I think that this partly clears up what happended to Polly as it would seem that it was Polly that went to Russia. We do not know what happened to her afterwards"
