Edward was born in Bondgate, Ripon as were all of his siblings, but his father, Peter BURNETT, was a Bishop Monkton man. There is very convincing evidence to suggest that after his father's premature death in 1727, Edward's mother moved the family back to Bishop Monkton; where they were supported by parish relief. There are two entries in the overseers accounts for Bishop Monkton which mention Peter Burnett's children and his wife - but not Peter himself. It is very likely therefore that Edward was brought up in Bishop Monkton.
There is also strong evidence to support the case for this Edward, son of Peter BURNETT, being the Edward BURNETT who married Elizabeth ASHBY at Kirkby Malzeard in 1750 and settled in Littlethorpe. The entry in the marriage register gives Edward's residence as "Mountine" [sic] - obviously a mis-spelled Monkton, ie Bishop Monkton - and Edward and Elizabeth named their first son Peter. Furthermore the Ripon parish register has only one other BURNETT entry which gives abode as Littlethorpe before the above Peter's baptism in 1752. Edward BURNETT is therefore most likely to have moved to Littlethorpe shortly after his marriage in 1750.
11. Anthony BURNETT
Anthony left a will, dated 1 Mar 1799, proved 3 Dec 1819, which named brothers Peter, William and Christopher as beneficiaries. Also named as beneficiaries were sisters Elizabeth POSTILL, Ann WELLS and Mary BURNETT. Sister Mary was the sole executrix. Anthony's personal estate was valued at under £20. Anthony described himself as a "flax dresser" in his will; probate documents describe him as a "yeoman". What is certain is that Anthony was a bachelor - date of death is also given in the probate records.
Witnesses to the will were John COATES and John BATTY and Anthony signed as Anthony BURNITT
12. William BURNETT
Ripon parish register records the burial of Wm son of Edward BURNETT of Littlethorpe on 7 Jan 1758.
A beneficiary of brother Anthony's will in 1819 under her married name POSTILL. She was not, therefore, the Elizabeth BURNETT, spinster of Littlethorpe, whose burial was recorded in the Ripon parish register on 19 Dec 1781.
14. William BURNETT
A beneficiary of his brother Anthony's will in 1819.
15. Ann BURNETT
A beneficiary of her brother Anthony's will in 1819 under her married name WELLS/WALLS.
16. Mary BURNETT
A beneficiary and sole executrix of her brother Anthony's will in 1819.
Ripon parish register records the burial of Mary BURNETT, of Littlethorpe, age 85yrs, on 13 Aug 1848. The given age at death suggests birth in c1764 - close enough to this Mary's date of baptism; since given ages at death are notoriously inaccurate.
