Peter was almost certainly closely related to John BURNETT of Bishop Monkton (b: c1711), husband of Mary ATKINSON, and Thomas BURNETT of Bishop Monkton [b: c1708], husband of Mary DICKENSON; in fact John and Thomas may have been Peter's sons. There was a six year gap between Peter's marriage in 1706 and the baptism of his first known child in 1712 - the above John and Thomas could well have been born during that period.
Peter was born in Bishop Monkton but his residence was given as Bondgate at the baptisms of all of his known children [his wife Ann SIMPSON was born in Bondgate]. Peter died at Bondgate two years after the baptism of his youngest son. It is thought that his widow, Ann BURNETT, took her children back to Bishop Monkton - where they 'qualified' for parish relief. An entry in the accounts of the overseer of the poor at Bishop Monkton in 1739 reads:
"Jno Bolton ye now overseer enters of his office ye 9th of May so ye first weekly payment will be May ye 10th for all ye poor people Except Petters Burnit child which he enters uppon att May Day and ye first weeks payment will be upon ye 8th of May."
This is thought to refer to Peter's youngest child, Peter jnr, who would have been 14yrs old.
The accounts for 1757 include the entry:
"...paid to Peter Burnett wife by order of the town £1.10. 0"
This may refer to Ann BURNETT, the widow of Peter BURNETT, who would have been 77yrs old at the time, or it may refer to the wife of Peter BURNETT jnr. - though no marriage has been found for him.
William was born in Bondgate, Ripon, six years after his parents married.
There were almost certainly other children before him - possibly
including John BURNETT (b:c1711), husband of Mary ATKINSON.
