James was already a widow at the time of the 1891 census and the age given for daughter Margaret in 1901 census returns suggests a birth in c1890. First wife Mary [DODDS] died in 1890 possibly as a result of giving birth to Margaret. James obviously married again - his second wife being named Jane, born in London [as per 1901 census] and they had at least one daughter, Daisey, born in c1892. The "Free BMD" web site identifies Jane Elizabeth GREY as spouse of James Thomas BURNETT.

89. William BURNETT

1851 census: HO107/2370, folio 388, p11
William was with his parents and siblings at Coxwold - see notes for father William BURNETT

1861 census: ? [not found]

William gave his age as 23yrs at his marriage on 28 Sep 1865 at Slingsby. This is consistent with his date of baptism - both suggest a birth date in 1842. The marriage was 'announced' in the "Malton Messenger" newspaper of 30 Sep 1865:
"On the 28th inst, at Slingsby, by Rev. W. CARTER, Mr Wm. BURNETT, blacksmith, to Anne, youngest daughter of Mr Isaac KNEESHAW."

Emma DALBY         dau, 4, Bradford
//

The youngest of the children, Emma DALBY, described as William's daughter, was in fact his step-daughter. William's first wife Ann KNEESHAW, who is known to have been born in Slingsby, Yorks, must have died some time after Polly's birth in c1875. GRO Index of Deaths does have an entry for an Ann BURNETT whose death in 1879 was registered in Bradford. With a young family to look after William married again - he married Ann DALBY in 1880. The GRO Index has their marriage registered during the September quarter 1880 at Bradford. Ann was a widow herself - Emma DALBY being her daughter from her first marriage.

Family souces suggest that William emigrated to Canada in c1892 and four years later moved to Forge Village, Massachusetts in the USA. He was still in Forge Village when he died in 1926.
[Information provided by Mike T. BURNETT]

In fact William emigrated in c1882 and moved into the US in 1887. Forge Village is about 3mls from Westford, Massachusetts.

It seems likely that William misunderstood the question regarding his immigration to the US. 1882 was probably the year he emmigrated from England but he first went to Canada and then to the US about 5yrs later.

Ann KNEESHAW

Ann KNEESHAW is known to have been born in Slingsby in 1846 she was not therefore the wife named Ann recorded with William BURNETT in Bradford at the time of the 1881 census – now known to have been a widow named Ann DALBY who married William in 1880.  Ann BURNETT, nee KNEESHAW died between 1875 and 1881 and the death of Ann BURNETT registered at Bradford in 1879 was almost certainly hers.

Family legend has it that William ran away from home while still a boy and was last heard of in the South African diamond territory during World War I
[Information provided by Mike T. BURNETT]

William certainly did not accompany his parents & siblings when the family emigrated to Canada in 1882. And the following 1891 census return appears to include him:
RG12/3630, folio 26, p 47
Arthur W. BURNETT, 25, *married*, cloth finisher, born Slingsby was recorded as a boarder with fish dealer George KITCHINGMAN in Bradford.
//
Forenames were switched but this was without doubt William Arthur BURNETT, born 1865, Slingsby.
GRO Index of Marriages has the marriage of William Arthur BURNETT and Annie Maria MORLEY in 1886 at Bradford. This is likely to have been the marriage of this individual. The whereabouts of his wife Annie in 1891 remain unknown.

The "Yorkshire BMD" website has another marriage of William Arthur BURNETT and Sarah Hannah WATSON at Leeds Register Office in 1892

No record has been found of William or either of his possible wives after 1891 and it is not known if he had any children.

Ann Maria DALBY

Ann was a widow when she married widower William BURNETT at Bradford in 1880. William had four children with his first wife, who had died just a year previously, and Ann had a daughter named Emma DALBY from her first marriage. The name of Emma's father is not known and Ann's maiden surname is also unknown at this stage.

William and Ann had a son named William Ernest BURNETT born at Bradford in 1881 before they emigrated to Canada, with all but one of their children, in 1882. After four or five years in Canada the family crossed into the USA and settled at Forge Village, Westford, Massachusetts.

In successive census returns, from 1881 in England through 1900 to 1920 in America, Ann gave conflicting information. Her name was given as Ann (1881), Maria (1900), Ann M. (1910) and Maria (1920). From her given ages; 28 (1881), 45 (1900), 57 (1910) and 66 (1920) her suggested year of birth was 1852, 1855, 1853 and 1854 respectively [see notes for husband William BURNETT]

A letter written in 1957 by Ann's grandson Leonard BURNETT, then living in Concord, New Jersey, named his grandmother as Hannah Maria. The letter described "Hannah" as a "tiny, sprightly woman, lived a while with each of her daughters, finaly dying at 84 - stone deaf - while with Aunt Bessie (Wyman) in Camden, N.J." Depending on her true year of birth this suggests that she died between 1936 and 1939 inclusive.  Leonard BURNETT's "Aunt Bessie" was Ann's step-daughter Margaret Annie.
