8. Philip BURNETT

Listed as a "freeholder" in 1829 with freehold land at Barugh. Philip's address at that time was given as Scarborough.

Philip left a will which named sons-in-law Thomas HARRISON, Thomas LEADLEY and Matthew LYON as co-executors and trustees. Named beneficiaries of the will were:
wife Elizabeth
daughter Hannah, wife of Richard BAXTER
daughter Etty, wife of Matthew LYON
daughter Christiana, wife of Thomas HARRISON
daughter Elizabeth BURNETT
daughter Mary Ann, wife of Thomas LEADLEY
daughter Sarah, wife of Richard HOPPS.
The will also included the statement - "I declare that the reason for my not giving anything to my sons John BURNETT and Robert BURNETT is that I have already given them a full proportion of my property."

Monumental Inscription, Lockton churchyard:
"Sacred to the Memory of Philip Burnett, who died April 8 1838 aged 73yrs. Also Elizabeth Burnett who departed this life March 20 1840 aged 77yrs"

19. Hannah (BONNET) BURNETT

A beneficiary of her father's will in 1838 when she was described as "... my daughter Hannah, wife of Richard BAXTER ..."

25. Christiana BURNETT

A beneficiary of her father's will in 1838 when she was described as "my daughter Christiana, wife of Thomas HARRISON "

Christiana and her husband Thomas had one daughter, also named Christiana. The daughter, Christiana HARRISON, married William SCOBY who was almost certainly the "friend" named as an executor of the will of Philip BURNETT, husband of Mary BURNETT [his second cousin]. William SCOBY was Mary BURNETT's cousin. Pay attention at the back!!

Death Notice: "Malton Messenger", 2 Feb 1867.
"On Wednesday, Jan 30th, Christiana, the beloved wife of Thomas HARRISON, Esq., of Hob-Cote House, Barugh, aged 68 years. She was universally respected, and in her removal the poor have lost a valuable and sympathising friend."

26. Elizabeth BURNETT

Philip BURNETT of Barugh is known to have had a daughter named Elizabeth - she was a beneficiary of his will in 1838 when she was described as "my daughter Elizabeth BURNETT"

A five year gap in baptisms of children of this Philip BURNETT suggests Elizabeth may have been born c1803.

It his *highly likely* that she was the Elizabeth BURNETT in the following census extract:
1851 census: HO107/2373, folio 5, p2
Lastingham
Sarah STEPHENSON, head, wid, 28, annuitant, born Cropton
Elizabeth BURNETT, lodger, unm, 40, annuitant, born Barugh
Ann BAXTER, serv, unm, 16, house servant, born Cropton<-----Philip BURNETT's wife was the former Hannah BAXTER
//

The given age in 1851 suggests birth c1810 - four years after the baptism of Philip's last known child.

27. Mary Ann BURNETT

A beneficiary of her father's will in 1838 when she was described as "... my daughter Mary Ann, wife of Thomas LEADLEY ..."
