Notes

18. William BURNITT

1841 census: Not found

1851 census: No trace of William or his wife and first child, daughter Mary, in the national index to 1851 census returns. Given that he was a mariner he and his family may have been away at sea at the time of the census.

William obtained his masters certificate during 1857 - as per the following extracts from an index to Lloyd's "Captains Registers":
BURNITT, William b. Yorkshire 1824, S71243 - vol.2 1857-1867, 1871-1873; vol.16 1874-1876, 1878; vol.29 1881-1882, 1887; vol.44 1888-1889

William owned the vessel of which he was master - built in 1856 and registered at Knottingley it was presumably named after his first wife, and mother of all of his children, Sarah Elizabeth LEE. Information provided by David James BURNITT [Jan 2004] shows that William also owned or co-owned a number of other vessels registered at Knottingley including: the "Carrier" (built 1845), the "Mary Ann" (built 1847), the "Estella" (built 1858) and the "Henrietta" (built 1868).

GRO Index of Births: BURNITT, Mary Elizabeth, Dec 1850, Pontefract, xxii 493

37. Elizabeth Lapish BURNITT

The GRO Index of Births for the March quarter of 1854 has Elizabeth Lapish BURNITT with the same registration details as William Lee BURNITT. It must be assumed that they were twins. William Lee was baptised at Knottingley on 16 Jan 1854 but there is no record of Elizabeth Lapish having been baptised. William Lee died as an infant on 13 Feb 1854, but Elizabeth Lapish survived to adulthood and married Edmund MASSINGHAM at Snaith, Yorkshire, on 6 Jul 1874 [Information from a descendant, Fay Woods. Contact made via this website Jan 2011.]
Fay also provided the following notes: "Edmund Massingham was bapt 19 July 1848 at Field Dalling, Norfolk he was buried 15 July 1933 also at Field Dalling. He and Elizabeth had 11 children and she was buried, also at Field Dalling, on the 27 June 1931. On her marriage certificate her father is recorded as William Jackson Burnett."

20. John BURNITT

*Probably* the twin brother of Ann BURNITT baptised at the same time as John [14 Jun 1829]

John became a seaman, eventually becoming a master mariner during 1856. Merchant Seamen records at the National Archive give John's date of birth as 21 Apr 1830 [BT113/3, 1845-54] This was an error, John must have been born in 1829 - he was baptised in June of that year (see above). An index to Lloyd's "Captains Registers" contains the following entry:
BURNITT, John b. Yorkshire 1828, S50481 - vol.2 1856-1868, 1870, 1873; vol.16 1876, 1879; vol.29 no voyages listed

No record of John has been found in 1841 or 1851 census returns. He married Eliza RICHARDSON at Goole in 1852 but was not recorded at home with his wife and children in Goole at the time of the 1861 census either. He was almost certainly away at sea at the time of each of these censuses. His wife and children were living in "Richardson's Buildings" in Doyle Street, Hook at the time of the 1861 census [see notes for wife Eliza RICHARDSON] The buildings may well have been owned by a member of his wife's family.

21. George BURNITT

George and his sister Mary Ann were baptised on the same day, three days after the death of their mother Mary Ann BURNITT in 1833. It is thought highly likely that George and Mary Ann were twins and that their mother died as a result of complications during their birth. A monumental inscription in St. Botulph's churchyard, Knottingley, gives their mother's date of death as 17 Oct 1833 - [David James BURNITT, a descendant of George, has assumed that this was the date of birth of George and his sister Mary Ann.]

1841 census: HO107/1310/11, folio 18, p27
George and two of his siblings were 'lodging' with James & Ester FEWSTER in Aire Street. Knottingley - see notes for father John BURNITT

George married Ann Asquith GREEN on 9 Aug 1857 at Christ Church, East Knottingley. The marriage certificate describes George as a mariner and names his father as John BURNITT, also a mariner. His wife's father, William GREEN, was also a mariner.
[Information provided by David James BURNITT]

George became a master mariner, gaining his "Certificate of Competence" in Cork, Ireland, in 1866 - as per the following extract from an index to Lloyd's "Captains Registers":
BURNITT,George b. Yorkshire 1834, C17014, Cork 1866 - vol.2 1866-1873; vol.16 1875; vol.29 no voyages listed

David James BURNITT also provided the following note:
"George died on 1 Apr 1875 aged only 42yrs. The cause of death was given as Phthisis, a wasting disease often associated with tuberculosis or the miners' disease emphysema. It is not known where he was buried. Two years later a Knottingley Trade Directory bears an entry for Ann Asquith Burnitt (Mrs), Shopkeeper, Low Green - presumably a necessity to support the family."

All information about the descendants of this George BURNITT was provided by David James BURNITT, himself a descendant of George. [Contact details held on file]
